It started out with a mealy dough as the bottom, then I piled in a homemade apple filling inside. The apple filling was thinly sliced Granny Smith Apples that I cooked over the stove with cinnamon sugar, cornstarch, and water. I boiled it to remove the starchy taste (from the cornstarch) and the mixture thickened up nicely. For some reason though, my group's filling was much lighter than every other groups' filling.
When I egg washed the edges of the crust, and the apples were piled in and smoothed out, I began the lattice work. I rolled out the top disc of dough as if it were going straight onto the pie, then cut thin strips from it. My strips were about 1/2"-3/4" thick. After carefully weaving each strip onto the pie, I egg washed the top and sprinkled coarse sugar onto it. I then baked it at 400 degrees for 35 minutes.
When I removed it from the oven, the strips were golden brown, with a few dark brown spots (I like the variations in color). The lattice was nice and crispy, and the apple filling had a nice flavor and gooey consistency. Overall, I'm very happy with how it turned out!
